The students in Cefalù enjoy the assistance of our partner, Dott.ssa Rosalba Provenza. The methodology and didactics of the lessons correspond to those in Mongerbino. Here the courses take place in the rooms of an old convent, which was transformed into a study centre where our Italian language branch resides.The school overlooks one of the most important streets in Cefalù, close to the city centre. The address is Via San Pasquale, number 15. The students who are about to begin a course gather on Monday at 9 o'clock at School. During this meeting the presentation of the courses takes place and the students take a test to see what level of the language they are at, in order to form groups appropriately. In addition to the Italian lessons, there is also the possibility of following seminars on Sicilian literature , history of the Italian language and art in Sicily and Italy. Dott.ssa Provenza has worked at our school for many years. While taking care of our students with great interest and passion, she offers great understanding and friendliness, typical of the people from South Italy, which is greatly appreciated by our students. On the day of your arrival, she will accompany you to the apartment of your choice or the family with which you will be staying. The local urban bus, which runs a regular and frequent service, guarantees connections with the town to students staying in hotels located outside the city's centre. Il Centro is located in a Milanese building from the 18th century, with frescos on the ceiling and wooden floors that evoke the atmosphere of distant times. The school building is situated in the centre of Milan, just a couple of minutes up the street from La Scala opera house, a stone’s throw from the Brera Art Museum, in the artists’ quarter full of restaurants, pubs and galleries. Every month Il Centro organizes extracurricular activities for its students, as opportunities to improve their knowledge of culture and Italian language. The school on those occasions becames a meeting point for all the students of different classes. The school offers a wide variety of courses. Groups consist of 6-10 students from countries all over the world creating a stimulating and creative atmosphere in class. Each lesson lasts 60 minutes. Il Centro organizes Italian language courses with a range of schedules and durations. Students can choose among groups that meet 5, 3 or 2 times a week, for either 2 or 4 hours per day. Students with time constraints related to work or other commitments can also opt for individual lessons that can be scheduled to suit their needs. Group courses have a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 10 students per class, and course content is closely aligned with the students’ real needs. At the elementary levels, for example, we emphasize oral Italian over writing and grammar. The forms and vocabulary needed to deal with common situations related to shopping, public transport, bureaucracy and such are introduced. When selecting teaching methods, we favour those that permit a modular approach to the communication needs of individual students, including differentiation of the materials employed. We try to utilize cultural differences to the advantage of all participants through the exchange of information and experiences that can be used in group activities. Learning materials include not only the most recent Italian language textbooks, but also worksheets developed by Il Centro’s staff. These use passages from authentic Italian, both spoken and written, as well as games, video-based activities and grammatical summaries extracted from real-life experience and indicative of the differences between Italian and other languages. Outside classroom hours, students may also work on their Italian during cultural-linguistic activities organized in the afternoon or do individual work in the self-study lab.
